I think the argument is less 'ignore it and it will go away' and more 'ignore it and we can spend more time being happy rather than exasperated'. Activism and education are good things that can change minds, of course they are, but there are those who wont be taught and are not worth the hassle. Not that I'd prevent people from fighting the good fight, in case it sounds like I'm blanket condemning you and the OP...but I get where the others are coming from here.
